When photgraphing any wildlife, if the subject is of an average or dark shade and the background is much lighter or very bright, try using some plus exposure compensation (+EV). It is useful to take test shots first to judge how much compensation is best.

To photograph birds of medium size in flight I often use centre-weighted focusing and, with vibration reduction on, try to follow and focus on the targeted bird to get a good shot of it.
