It is not easy to get a sharp focus on small birds flying past closely. Autofocus is unsuitable, so focussing at an estimated distance is necessary, and some well positioned flash helps to freeze such birds in flight.

Most shots will still not be in focus but digital photography enables very many to be taken until an acceptable one is achieved.
